Our role: Mechanical services design Passivhaus consultancy The project: ~100 dwellings for Norwich City Council. The scheme comprises a mix of 2- and 3-storey houses and apartment blocks. We have developed simple services with the focus on designing for install, commissioning and use. As Passivhaus consultants our input has been most notable on the glazing design, where we have helped balance heat loss, overheating risk and daylight design. The architects are Riches Hawley Mikhail and we have worked with GreenGauge on the building services. Our focus: The larger site at Agar poses many different problems in comparison to low rise dwellings, for example the mechanical services design becomes critical and thermal bridging can be much more significant. As well as certifying this project we have provided training for the design teams, given initial advice on buildability and thermal performance, and are looking forward to significant site presence. Although the entire building was treated to a thermal performance upgrade, only the office is EnerPHit certified. Our focus: This is the latest in string of low-energy development projects by WARM homes. As it is our own office and we wanted to be as involved as possible throughout the process. We undertook all the major design work, we had a significant site presence and we installed the ventilation system ourselves. We have also used it as a test bed for trialling various monitoring equipment. As well as hands on experience of the build this project has given us all a superb understanding of what it’s like to occupy a Passivhaus.
